What Are the Different Types of Biomass?

Before taking a look at the types of biomass, let’s understand what biomass is. Basically, organic stuff such as crops, wood, animal wastes, seaweed, etc. is biomass that can be used as a fuel or energy source. Biomass is major as well as an affordable source of energy after the sun. Biomass is an energy source that will never end since waste matter will always exist. Let’s take a look at different types of biomass that you can convert into briquettes with the help of a biomass briquette machine.

Wood and Agriculture Products:

At present, wood, logs, bark, chips, and sawdust are approximately 44% of biomass energy sources. However, apart from these, there are many biomass organic stuff such as agricultural waste products such as corn cobs and fruit pits that can produce biomass energy. To produce electricity, wood and waste produced from wood are utilized. Industries are making use of a lot of electricity to generate waste. A lot of waste products are used by paper mills and sawmills to produce electricity and steam for their use. Although, they need to purchase more electricity from utilities since they utilize a large amount of energy.

Solid Waste:

When the trash is burned, then it turns waste into a usable form of energy. Half of the energy content of garbage comes from plastics made from natural gas and petroleum. Those power plants where garbage is burned for energy production are known as waste-to-energy plants. These power plants produce electricity much as coal-fired plants do.

Landfill Gas and Biogas:

Fungi and bacteria eat dead animals and plants, causing them to decay or rot. A fungus on a rotting log changes cellulose to sugars to feed itself. However, in a landfill, this procedure is slowed; methane gas is still generated as the waste decays. To gather methane gas, new regulations need landfills for environmental and safety reasons. Methane gas is not harmful, although it is colorless and fragrance-free. If methane gas leaks into nearby homes and catches fire, then it can cause explosions and fires. Landfills can gather the methane gas and utilize it as fuel after purifying. By using human and agricultural waste, methane gas can be produced.

Ethanol:

Sugar and starch present in plants are fermented to make ethanol, which is an alcohol fuel and after that distilling. Any organic material consisting of starch, sugar, or cellulose can be made into ethanol. Corn is one of the best sources to produce ethanol in the United States. Latest technologies are generating ethanol from cellulose in woody fibers from grasses, trees, and crop waste materials.

Final Words

These different types of biomass are used as an energy source. Moreover, biomass matter is produced naturally, which is used to produce various energy sources such as briquettes that are made through biomass briquette machines.
